The 22 Imperatives of Leadership: #18 – Leaders Have a Sense of Humor

Life should be seriously playful and playfully serious.

Life is serious business.

Business is serious as well.

Yet, it’s also meant to be a joyful adventure of increasing complexity.

I studied for several years in the Andes Mountains with don Jose Luis, one of my 6 major life mentors and coaches.

Jose Luis is of the Q’ero tradition, rooted in the ancient Inca teachings of shamanism.

What does shamanism have to do with Leadership in a modern world?

A lot actually.

Certainly not many of the rituals and incantations are applicable, but the understanding of life principles, our connection to all beings, as well as the realization of our oneness with nature are very applicable.

Quantum physics is now proving through mathematics and science what many of these ancient traditions have intuitively known long before modern ways.

While I firmly believe that the evolution of consciousness moves forward never back (regardless of how things may temporarily appear), there’s much to be incorporated and integrated from our ancestors into modernity that we’ve long forgotten.

While we’ve made quantum leaps in technology and sciences,
we’ve only taken baby steps in our spiritual understanding;
and in the meantime, sold our souls.

One of the things I learned from studying these ancient ways, is the concept of “Sacred Play.”

The Q’ero teach that all of life is Sacred Play. It’s not real. It’s just a sacred game to be played.

Please understand that doesn’t mean you shouldn’t play to win.

Anytime you go into any activity or game, you should always play to win.

Just make sure you properly define win.

Click here to learn the true definition of "winning" and to truly learn, grow and improve.

The greatest win is overcoming your own small self and its limitations. Truly winning means beating your own previous personal best. That’s a win; and it has nothing to do with anyone or anything else.

The greatest way you can ever win is to beat your
own self-limitations and previous performance.
Winning has nothing to do with anyone else.

I remember years ago one of my team members and I were discussing life and business. She said to me, “James I think you believe that business and life are all a game.”

Correct.

And I play the game of business fully and completely.

Likewise, the game of life.

And I play to win.

If anything is worth doing, it’s worth doing 100%. If not fully and completely then don’t play at all. Go all in. Or don’t even bother going.

If anything is worth doing, it’s worth doing 100%.
If you’re not playing fully then don’t play at all.

But it’s vitally important to remember that it’s a game to be played.

It’s humorous and sad all at the same time when I see someone getting angry when they “lose” a game by measuring themselves to another’s performance.

These individuals are externally, comparatively, and competitively defined; and this is not a happy and fulfilling way to live.

Remember when John McEnroe, at the height of his tennis career, would lose a match or think the chair umpire made a faulty call? If you do, then I need say no more.

If you’re too young to recall, then just imagine loud yelling, cursing and racquets being thrown.

While authentic leaders have a serious mission and purpose to fulfill,
they remember not to take themselves too seriously.

Remember, “win” or “lose” by external measures, at the end of the game, no matter what game you’re playing, the pieces get collected, the board gets folded, and it ALL goes back in the box.

All you have left is the memory of how you played and the joy or angst you experienced during that play.

Play for your own excellence and greatness.

Play to win.

Chase playful growth and improvement.

Play to laugh at your falls and “fails” because that’s how we learn.

Be serious about your objective yet not taking the game, or yourself, too seriously.

Life and business are both a game; and at the end of it all no matter
what you’ve accomplished, acquired or not… the pieces get collected,
the board gets folded, and it ALL goes back in the box. Play!
Yet see clearly and play wisely. Don’t take yourself too seriously.
