Resist not evil
~ The Christ. Matthew 5:39
Now you may be somewhat surprised at the title of this blog; and yet, I guarantee when you get it, it’s profound.
I pulled this idea right from one of the greatest leaders and prophets to grace our planet (there have been many).
In Matthew 5:39 of the New Testament, the Christ states: “Resist not evil.”
Now what in the world does that mean? And why?
To understand, we first need to define what “evil” really means.
It’s no accident that the word “evil” is the word “live” spelled backwards. As an aside, the word “devil” is the word “lived” spelled backwards. Interesting.
The word evil is the word live spelled backwards. To practice evil
is to live backwards. Likewise, the word devil is the word
lived spelled backwards. Food for thought.
To practice evil is to live in a backwards way—a way that is out of alignment with universal law and principle. A way that promotes degeneration versus generation. Evil promotes a lack of love versus love.
Have you ever heard the old saying, “What you resist persists”?
The fact, is that resisting evil with more evil is like attempting to eradicate stupidity with more stupidity.
Ignorance cannot be solved with more ignorance.
Attempting to eradicate evil with more evil is like attempting
to eradicate stupidity with more stupidity. Ignorance will
never be solved with more ignorance.
Greater evil, stupidity, and ignorance of universal law just adds logs to the fire of the same.
Anger will never be solved by responding with anger. It will only be solved with the exact opposite.
Anger and fear will never be solved with more anger and fear.
It will only be solved with the exact opposite.
Responding the same is like adding logs to a raging fire and wondering why it never goes out.
Look, at the very moment that something evil, twisted, wrong, or unfair happens to you, you have the choice to either respond in kind (in a backwards way), or to be kind and loving.
A fire will only go out when it’s not fed; or when it’s doused with water; and water always wins.
A fire will only go out when it’s not fed; or when it’s
doused with water; and water always wins!
Think about this: no matter how much a fire blazes—and no matter how sexy and powerful it may seem—water always wins! Even if it takes a while.
Is it any wonder that esoteric traditions state the water element is the feminine energy, emotion and love?
To practice truly eradicating evil, I’ve found the following strategy to be powerful. I write about in my new book The Business of Redemption:
When something hits you sideways, instead of reacting. Act:
The breath is a magical thing and there’s a lot of modern science that talks about the power of breathing that we won’t get into here.
Suffice to say, that when you take a few deep long breathes you can think more clearly.
Relaxing and removing some of the tension will be the natural outcome of breathing.
When life or someone takes a shot at you:
Breathe. Relax. Prioritize. Act.
~ The Business of Redemption
From that point you can think about your priorities more clearly. Do you want to lower yourself to the level of the “evil” being directed at you?
Do you want to “win” or would you rather be peaceful and happy?
From that perspective you can act from your values versus knee jerk reaction.
